Blessed by the Cover Gods

I recently got a picture of my new baby.  By baby, I mean my new book.  By picture, I mean the cover.  Yes, I got the cover for Taken at Dusk, book three in my Shadow Falls series.  And I really like it.  I also just finished the book so I’m really excited about this third installment of Kylie’s story.

So what’s happening in Taken at Dusk?  Well, it’s very emotional, it’s funny, and it’s passionate.  With both Lucas and Derek back at camp, the romantic tension escalates.  Kylie and her two roommates, Della and Miranda, make a pact about boys.  The paranormal world is bigger than ever as Kylie struggles to change Fate and learns some very hard lessons.  Perry is up to his old tricks and creates storm of chaos that nearly takes down the dining hall.  I know, I know, you guys are still waiting for book two, Awake at Dawn.  But I just wanted to share the cover and just a few tidbits.

Now, back to the cover or shall I say, covers.  I love putting them side by side.   I love the running theme of a small person in a big place.  I love that each cover hints at the story within: a young girl searching for something bigger than herself.  In a lot of ways, that theme defines Kylie’s character.  She feels small as she struggles to find her place in the world, to discover who and what she is.

Many of you have emailed me and asked how many books there will be in the series.  I still can’t tell you exactly, but I can tell you this. The series doesn’t end at book three.

Now, because I’m going to be plotting book four, and introducing a few new characters, I need you guys to help me.  I totally suck at coming up with names.  So I decided to launch a contest to let one of my readers choose the name of a new character.  To win, just make sure you leave a post and tell me the name you want me to use.  And tell a friend.  On July 15th, I’ll be drawing one name out of the hat and I will use it in book four.  So get you name into the contest by leaving a post at my blog.

  1. Hey Christie,

Don’t worry, I’m announcing the contest on my blog, just wanted to make sure the post was here first. Congratulations and I’m excited to read the next books! Great idea for a contest. Don’t have to enter me (I sorta feel like it would be unfair me being your “book pimp” and all) but I did want to post a comment and cheer you on! Best wishes and this is great 🙂

  2. I’d love to have a character in your book named Kim or Kimberly. That’s my best friend’s name. =)

I’m so excited for your next book to come out. I love this series.

  3. I absolutely love: “Wind” -for a girl
    “Ian” -for a guy
you didn’t specify if the new character was going to be a guy or a girl so… yeah =)

      • You’re welcome. BTW I wrote a blog post about the cover =) I don’t have many readers yet, but I linked this post, so if anyone wants they can enter a name, too.
Oh, and I can’t wait to read the book!

P.S. I’m going crazy waiting for Awake at Dawn!

  4. I like the name Riley a lot! Whether it’s for a guy or girl!

Damien is also a cool guy name! Never met one but I plan on using this name in a novel I plan to write some time!

For a girl Tanya is pretty cool. Really the girls’ name list I have in my head is wayyy too long! This is another name I plan on using as well in a book I’m trying to query for right now, but I don’t mind sharing! 😉

  5. I really LOVE your books, and I think Aureole would be a great name for a girl!! That’s my mums name and its really unique =)

Also I think Byron is a good name for a boy.
    xo

    • Ord for short.
Also, for a boy I like Loedolff, I know its a very odd name… Its like Rudolf (the red nose reindeer) But with an L =)

  9. I loove the covers they look great! I can’t wait to read books 2 and 3. I really love Born at Midnight and the fact that you have the POV from Lucas and Derek on your website, that was awesome to read.

As for character names, I like the name Tristan, and Jaedan. I can’t think of any for girls but I will continue to think about it.

  10. I just read the first book today when a friend had mentioned it and I fell in love with it:p. I saw the POVs on your website and I enjoyed having them from kylie’s many suitors;p. The pictures weren’t exactly how I pictured them to be but never the less the POVs were great!
For a boy the names Andrew or Brandon sound good. Those names have a special place in my heart;p. For a girl, um, Ansley or Lauren seem unique too.
    A Shawdow Falls reader,

    Elizabeth

    • Elizabeth,

I love hearing about “word of mouth” selling books. I think that is the best, very best, PR there is for a writer. So if you want to help any author out, tell another reader about their book if you enjoyed it. I probably buy over 75% of my books because of word of mouth.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean about pictures not matching the image you pulled from the book. You have to remember that picking images for characters is really hard. Sometimes you can’t find the image your really want, so you have to go with one that sort of looks like you want. Thanks so much for stopping in and I like Ansley. It’s different.

  11. I just finished Born at Midnight….it took me only 2 days. I was obsessed and couldn’t put it down. Thank you so much. I’ve haven’t been that excited about a book in a while.
I love the name Alice as a girl, but i also like James and Hunter….haha as boys.
🙂 Love you books can’t wait for October!! <3

    • Hi Amanda,

Thank you so much for posting. The biggest compliment a reader can give an author is that they couldn’t put the book down. You put a big smile on my face!! Can I tell you a secret? I had originally named Lucas, Hunter. But then when they wanted me to pick a pen name and picked it, I didn’t remember that I’d already used the name. So I had to change his Hunter to Lucas.

      Thanks again for the posting!

      CC

      • CC,
No problem. Lucas i think suits him anyways. I’m glad you considered it to be in your book. 🙂

        Paige,
I’d love to be friends with someone as avid a reader as me. We can talk anytime.

  12. Love the first book can’t wait for the second. My little sisters name is Rachael and im trying to get her to read the first book. also the name Dani, or my mom’s name is Cara i always liked that name.
I also am in love with the covers of the books there amazing.

    Rachael, Cara, Dani, Katelynn.
I also like the name Matthew for a guy.

    • Katelynn,

I like all those. I have a niece named Cara and I’ve been toying with using it. And I like Katelynn, and Dani, too. Thanks so much for dropping in.

      CC

  13. James, Jake, Ryan, Hunter, Matthew

    Sky, Marie, Lilly, Shelby, Carly.

I just kinda always liked these names. I’m bad at coming up with names my self it seems. 🙂

      • Paige,

I felt sorry for Sky. And when I was writing the book, I wasn’t sure who the bad guy/girl was going to be. But then for some reason it just hit me that her character had always come off a little dark. So I knew it had to be her. Sometimes, I think the hardest part of being a writer is being mean to some characters and writing bad characters. But we need bad characters in a book to help tell a story. So we have to write them and we have to make some bad things happen so our heroes and heroines can overcome and shine.

Thanks for stopping in and posting!

  14. Hi 🙂

I just absolutely LOVE your book, and I cannot wait until the next one!!! From the first page, I was hooked, and I have to say that it is one of the bet books I have ever read..It is amazing 😀
I have a few names which I would love if you maybe used one of them in your book? 🙂
-Addison (“Addie” for short) for a girl,
    -Dallas for a boy.
I have two more, which could be either a boy or a girl’s name, and they are Rory and Darcy 🙂
Once again, amazing books, and I’m looking forward to the others 🙂

    • Chloe,

I also like Chloe. I love Addie, too. I like nicknames. And Dallas is a name I’ve used before in books. Darcy is great, too. You guys are so much better at this than I am. I swear, I really get stuck picking out names. I’m going to compile all this names and keep them. And thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the book. I am having so much fun writing this series. When I write, it’s very common for me to laugh and to cry. As a matter of fact, it’s sort of a test. If it doesn’t make me feel anything, then I ususally go back and rework it. Thanks again for posting.

  16. Aurora is really pretty and feminine but it’s also powerful.
Audrey sounds sort of normal but delicate.
Winter is a really strong name.
Willow sounds very light and pretty but also wise, like she watches people.
Hunter, Jackson, or Silas for guys.

  17. I loved your book. I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in one day. I love all the characters and it is easy to relate to them. I am very anxious for october now! I like the name Eliana-Elie for short for a girl and Mateo-Teo for short. I like names that are not very common but not too out there.

  18. The new cover is awesome….. all three covers are! I love how she is wearing the same black dress in all three covers. For girl names I love Marissa or Grace. And for boy names I love Erik or Garret. I also shared this link on my facebook page!
    angelabluejeans7(at)yahoo(dot)com

  19. I love the covers. Cant wait to read the books. I have yet to read Born at midnight, but will soon get to it. And Awake at Dawn I have won an ark from you, just waiting till they are available. I just can not find them, so I may just have to buy the kindle version, though I want the book version. Once agaain love the covers.
    Much love,
    Telia

  20. I absolutely fell in love with this book and cannot wait until the second installment to arrive on the shelves! I do not know what kind of character you are looking for because depending on how the character is could determine a name. Here are a few names I thought about that could hopefully help you! I really like the names Chloe, Raine, Artemis, or Ava. they are pure names that possess characteristics such as; loyalty, courage, friendship, strength, and hope. As for a guy name with those same characteristics could be my personal favorite Emmett, or Alaric. If you are going for characters that are more on the bad guy side then for a guy Damien is another good choice (fits a guy with dark features and personality), and for a girl Danica. 🙂

  21. hay i would love if you put Nyssa as the new charater and this the way you spell my name its a name you don’t hear much in anything so i think it be a great name for your book so please pick my name its a lovely name

I love the colors of all of your covers. The first two book lean cool while the third is warm. Was that intentionally done to illustrate Kylie’s path?

    J. B.

  25. Hey wanted to comment on the covers
How come cover model for Kylie is always wearing same dress????
on the first cover is the picture supposed to show how kylie is there at the camp trying to figure out what she is and the second showing her still on that same task but the third her traveling elsewhere to find out????

    just curios
    Alexandra

ps sorry don’t know how to spell curios

  26. I would love to see the name Noelle (for a girl) pop up. Rarely ever see that one, and it’s one of my favorites, ever.
And, for lack of a better option, for a male, you can always use Hayden. 🙂

  27. And, also, CC, if you want to know the name of your cover font, it’s:
    Andron 2 English Corpus.
🙂 I feel proud for having discovered that.
The other font is on its way. 🙂

  28. I’m loving all these names. I’ve started a list for possible names in the future.

  31. Hey great series and awesome covers(especially the covers, they’re gorgeous)!

Hmm for names..it really depends on the person’s character, appearance and power..can you give us a clue or something to base on?
For now i’ll just try Jaedan, Gerard, Alphonse or Ludovico for guys. And for the girls..Winry, Mariano, or Winona? Oh oh and surnames can be Hawkeye or Blackmore or Yates or a more simple Collins?

  32. Ohh, that sounds fun. I’ve always thought you made up really nice names yourself, but 😀 a chance to name a character! How fun. 🙂

For a girl, about about, Aileen? She was my friend’s friend who recently passed away in a car crash. Or Sydney? 😀

For guys, I like the names: Nathaniel and Lucid?

  39. Hi CC. I just picked up your book at a bookstore yesterday and i couldn’t put it down until i finished it! I love the story and i’m ecstatic that you’re continuing the series and already in the process of doing it! Thank you so much for bring Kylie into my life. I really like discovering new books that are just amazing.

Anyway, i wanted to try my hand at this name “contest”. It’d be extremely cool if you picked a name i chose, and it appeared in a book in the Shadow Falls series, which is one of my all-time favourite now.

So, i’m suggesting Kai, which is my name. I think it’s more of a boy name, but i’m a girl, and it adds a twist if a female has such an “Asian” and “cool” sort of name. Also, i personally like the following names:
Dimitri, Imogen, Aria, Fallon, Anastasia, Jessamine, Blythe

Some of the names are actually my friends’ and i always thought they were awesome and sometimes wished i had those names! Anyway, i told my best friends, one of then who is actually the “owner” of the name Imogen.

Thanks again, CC, and you can count on me to be a great fan of your series!

Whenever I had to stop all I could think about was hurrying up and finishing whatever I was doing so I could keep reading! Now I’m super impatient for the next book to come out. Too bad its coming out in October though, because my birthday will be at the end of the month so I’ll have to wait til then because I’ll get it for a present… sad.

Anyway, on the subject of names. If one of the characters is a girl, I really like the name Lucinda. I think its pretty and there are tons of nicknames that can be derived from it: Lucy, Luce, Cindy, Cinda, etc. For boys, I like James or Isaac or Felix. Actually, I would have said Lucas first, that’s about my favorite boy’s name, but you already one of those [Team Lucas btw :-D].
