An Author’s Secret

Most authors will admit it. Some are afraid to admit it. But for me at least, the truth is that my books are a reflection of my personality, my moral character, and of the person I really am. So, if you’ve read my Shadow Falls books, you should have a pretty good clue as to who I am. But just in case you missed it, I decided to include a list:

Five Things You Should Have Realized About Me From Reading My Shadow Falls Series

1) I don’t like bullies.

People like Fredericka infuriate me. Making people feel badly about themselves just so you can feel good about yourself is just so darn wrong!!! I really try to accept people for what and who they are. Just because someone is different doesn’t mean they are bad.

2) I’m a romantic at heart.

Duh, you should really have figured that one out. I love romance. I love the thought of two people falling into that special emotional place where everything outside of the world disappears until all you can think about is that person. How he makes you feel; how his soft touch makes you glow on the inside. And how his kisses taste.

3) I follow the theory that laughter is the best medicine.

Have you noticed that Kylie and all her friend regularly get together and find tons of things to laugh about? I mean, how can a person not understand that laughter is key to getting though life’s crappy stuff. Seriously, bad stuff is going to happen sometimes, and the best way to survive is to tap into the wonderful healing power of laughter.

4) I believe in magic, fate and Karma.

Some people call it woo-woo. I just believe things happen for a reason. I believe the tiny choices we make in our lives guides us down a path and define our future. I believe when you give to the universe, you get back. If you are short on time, give some time away. If you are short on love, give some of that away. If you are short on money, give some of that away. It has worked so often for me, and I encourage you to try it.

5) I believe our mistakes are learning tools.

Look, everyone makes mistakes. We say the wrong thing, we let our mood effect how we treat people, and sometimes, we trust the wrong people. I’ve always said,” It’s okay to make mistakes if you learn from them. “ I believe in practicing forgiveness when it comes to mistakes, not only for other people, but for yourself. However, there is a difference between a mistake and character flaw. A mistake happens because someone wasn’t thinking clearly, a character flaw happens because a person doesn’t have the moral character to act and react in a good way.

Okay, so there you have it.  Five things you should have guessed by reading my books.  So tell me, is it true that a reader’s personality can be detected from the type of books they love to read?  What do you think?  What do your reading tastes tell about you?  Or is not the same thing?

  1. So sad I did not win but congratulations to Christina M. I like how you are open in what you believe I think that is what made me connect to yours books because I believe in these things to and I am able to connect because I have dealt with these issues I especially connect with number one I was always treated different because I was different and I think that is why I connect to your books and each characters different personalities because they each have a part I can connect to.Love your books can not wait to see what happens and I am counting down the days till I get more Kylie and Lucas moments.

  3. Personally i’m not sure what my reading habits say about me, i read a lot of book that all seem to have lots of action and romance not to mention they all cover dark theme and hard issues. I think all readers try to find a book that they connect with whether that something is big or small.either way the things we read and write are a reflection of ones personality.

  4. I’m not entirely sure how much the books I read say about me as a person, but I also don’t think that the books I enjoy have random attributes, either. I love a good romance, a strong and good main character, and I love having a bit of magic (or paranormal) in the books I read. Love is one of the most important things in life, and I think that’s reflected in my reading choices since everything I read has some sort of romance in it. I think that it’s important to be the best you can, with what you have, and I think that’s why I like good, strong main characters who do the right thing. As for loving magic or paranormal in a book, I think that stems from my huge imagination that I’ve always had, and how important imagination and creativity are in life.

Anyway, that’s about all I can glean from the types of books that I read–thanks for having this contest, and thanks for writing the Shadow Falls books! I am SO excited for Taken At Dusk….EEK:o)

  5. Well, my reading habit definitely tells you that I’m a romantic but I’m not so sure you can connect the books a person reads to his personality. I mean what would this tell us about all Stephen King fans? Lots of people love to read thrillers or dark fantasy – one of my best friends loves to read all about zombies and I’m not talking about the new romance zombie stuff 😉 The more blood and kills the better but in “real” life she is the sweetest person you can possibly know!

Thanks for another opportunity to win the ARC!

  6. That’s a hard question! I think books say a little bit about your personality, but maybe not everything. A lot of books I read are dark romance and supernatural, but I don’t think of myself as a dark person. I think I am kind of a hopeless romantic though 🙂
Thanks for another chance to win!!!

  7. Hi Guys….

Thanks for the comments. I love seeing your thoughts on books and if it relates to who you are. I think my reading preferences might be connected to my mood. And I don’t think that a person who enjoys horror and such makes them a bad person, I think it might make them a bit of an adrenaline lover, and they may not be that way in real life, but just in their reading life. Does that make sense?

  8. I don’t know if you can (should) judge a person by what they read, just like you can’t (shouldn’t) judge a book by it’s cover. A friend of mine was on an airplane once reading a romantic novel. The lady sitting next to her asked her what she was reading and she told her. The lady then scoffed at her and said “I don’t read fluff. I only read classics.” My friend being the snarky, hilarious person that she is responded, “well you must have a dull life.” And proceeded to finish her novel, effectively ignoring the snot next to her.

  9. I think that my reading tastes are eclectic. My top two favorite books are Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) and American Psycho (Brett Easton Ellis). Overall I read a lot of paranormal romance. I like the excitement and drama. But I am a quiet person. I think I like books that get me to think and take me somewhere new.

  10. I’m glad you don’t like bullies. They certainly aren’t a walk in the park to handle. I think everyone has probably handled one at some point, and knows what I mean.

Also to Christina M., congrats chica! Have some cake to go with your winnings. (I don’t actually have the cake, so you’ll have to imagine it…)

  11. I guess you could say the books I read kinda reflect on who I am. I hate reading books that are all realistic and some classics I read make me bored. Not that they aren’t good, it’s just I don’t really like them. I read more fantcy, make believe and I’m a BIG daydreamer and they work great with it. I guess you could also say I am a bit of a romantic, but hey book guys are like omg! Well most anyways XD. Well I know some people who like books that aren’t really like them by hey everyone different.

  13. I do think the reader’s personality can be detected from the books they read. I read a lot of paranormal romance and all my books are fantasy. Realistic books bore me and fantasy gives me a chance to imagine and get lost in other worlds. My family always tells me I daydream a lot and should focus on reality more than ‘fantasy worlds’. If the books I read weren’t here, I would probably be the most boring, un-imaginative person I know. I truly think the books you read (and enjoy) reflect your true personality.

  14. I love to read fiction mostly things some people wouldn’t like but I read it any way because i like thing that are unique and different like me. But when i was in high school people would always pick on me because of me being to myself and I disliked them for it and now that I am out of school I have forgiven them and I still have one really good friend from high school that i love like she were my real sister and even though we don’t get to see each other as often as I’d like because she lives in another state we still keep in contact on the phone but I do miss her. Any way I think that what you read dose say something about you and what you don’t say or do dose also.

  15. By the way the reason I love fantasy is because it lets me escape my reality and go into someone else’s and get lost sometimes I even forget to eat and drink I get so lost in the books I read and since I love to draw they help me imagine some new and interesting things to draw I also daydream a lot so I guess you could say that I am not a realistic person sometimes but am a fascinating one instead because a lot of people I know and love still cant quite figer me out! So I think it gos without saying that I am not much of a talker and I am very closed up to this world of people and come of as snobby but I am not I am quite the opposite! Any way i hope to hear from you soon C.C. and I love your books I can’t wait until the next ones come out!

  16. When is Taken at Dusk going to come out? I’m on team Lucas and I’m really hoping the Werewolf gains some ground in this book. Love the series and keep up the excellent work!

  17. I do think our reading choices reveal traits of our pesonalities, just as the stories themselves reveal things about their authors. I think that the fact that I like fiction -especially supernatural- books the best shows that I believe in magic, fate, Karma, destiny or whatever you want to call it. The people who I share my books with are my closest friends and family, and they are the people who know me the best. They know that the fact that I like romance in my books reveal that deep down I am a “mushy romantic”, no matter how hard I try to appear otherwise, to look tough. Through books they can see me, the real me. I know it sounds extremely cheesy and I would probably never admit it to my friends in so many words, but it’s true. Books reval who I am as much as they help *shape* who I am. What do you guys think? Do stories and books really help shape who we are? I really feel they do.

  18. Well I love to read paranormal romance novels. I am definitely romantic but sadly I’m not a vampire, were, or fae lol! But I do have a little bit of witch in me, I can do some of my own magic like Miranda! Thanks for this second chance! I cant wait to read Taken at Dusk!

  19. I’m not sure that I really believe in magic, but I like the idea of it. And I totally agree with all your points and could tell in your writing by just how passionately you wrote about it, haha! I think especially the fifth point, though, is really true. Eventually you get the question “if you can go back and change one thing, what would it be?” And I honestly can think of a lotta things, but I wouldn’t change them. We are who we are today because of past events

  20. I think that what you read maybe doesn’t reflect who you are, but maybe who you WANT to be. People read books that take them to where they want to go and allow them to do things that they wouldn’t get to do in reality. Broadening your horizons as a reader can spill over into your life as well. For me, reading books with strong female characters inspires me to stand up for my beliefs as well. I work with adolescents and I love pointing them toward books that they will connect to and that maybe even help them through situations.

  21. Oh my! I have so many things to say about this… First, I completely agree on the fact that we are all human and we all can make mistakes, oh believe me, I know! Also, it was proven that laughter is the best medicine against stress and anger. It releases a hormone, which I’ve forgotten the name, Endorphin I think, which promotes well-being in the body, it is also great for strengthening your immune system, it protects the heart and relaxes the whole body. It is also said to boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the maybe damaging effects of stress.
Second, I do believe that the type of books you read and like to read do describe who you are.
For example, I love fantasy books, romantic books and mystery books. Why? Well, I always say that I’m a dreamer, a hopeless romantic and a contradiction in itself thus being a mysterious to many people.
Finally, I also write, once and while, and noticed that most of the stories I write about are difficult loves but that in the end “Love does conquer all”. Maybe because I wish a prince charming would sweep me off my feat and be ready to face any difficulties and challenge just to be with me.
Can’t wait to read another post! <3

  22. I agree with what you said… The books the author have written somehow show the true personality of the one who has written it… And sometimes it also depends on what you’re mood was when you wrote that specific story… And I really agree when you said you believe in magic, fate and karma… Especially the last one, cause I have experienced a lot of it, both good and bad… And fate… Huh, guess we can’t just go against what really must happen, but I believe through our will we can make our own future that is for our own selves to cherish and protect… And magic… Magic is everything, as long as you believe in something… It does not automatically mean that it is the magic tricks one see at the sidewalks… It can reside in our hearts and because of that everything you put your heart into will always be given rewards…

  23. I’ve noticed some things about authors. Even if they write different series there’s always some consistency between all of their work. I love finding these little things that connect all the stories because it really does tell you things about the author.

As to the readers. I’m not sure if a certain reading style preference can define you. It’s like music. Different people listen to different music, yes you;ve got the die-hard fans that take it to the extreme and if you compare those you see major differences, but there are other, less pronounced fans that don’t show the differences. Plus, people have different reasons for reading what they read. One person could be reading YA paranormal books ebcause they belive in magic another could be reading it because they’re a huge romantic and another could be doing it to find out how kids think and who kids realte to, today. So I’m going to have to say, no. I don’t think a person’s reading preference can tell you too much about them. Maybe some small things, but nothing major.

  24. I loved the books and I think the “character style” preference revels a lot about the reader. For examplo, I love Derek much more than Lucas, because I value his virtudes. He respects Kylie’s feelings about sex, he knows what other people feel, so he has much more compassion for human being. Lucas is brave and passionate, but he does not have the same respect by mere humans beings. I feel Derek more sensible, more respectful about people and particularly about women, and he also is hot and passionate. So I think he deserves much more Kalye than Lucas. And this tells much about me, because it shows what kind of qualities I value.

  25. I love the books SO much! C.C is a great writer. I would love to meet her one day! I read BORN AT MIDNIGHT and AWAKE AT DAWN in a week and a half. I cant wait till the next book (TAKEN AT DUSK) comes out. C.C I wish you the best.
