I’m Off to New Zealand

I’m on my way to New Zealand, and I’m so excited about it. New Zealand is about as far away from Texas as you can get without getting closer. It’s about 2,500 miles off the East Coast of Australia and about 7,500 miles from Houston. Last year, RWNZ contacted me and asked if I would be a Keynote speaker at their conference August 18-20, 2017. Did I have to think about it? No way! I accepted immediately. So, I’m off to New Zealand this week for the RWNZ Conference at the Novotel Lakeside Hotel in Rotorua, which is on the north island of New Zealand. The area is known for its geothermal character with geysers and hot mud bath. It’s also known for its wines, so I’m looking forward to tasting some new wines. And Hubby is going with me, so we are planning on exploring the entire area while we are there. I promise I’ll take photos and share them with you.

I’m getting a divorce! Hubby and I had a good 31 years, but the gift he left on my keyboard this morning wiped all that away!!!! Okay…I’m not leaving him. But dad blast it!!! Spiders. What can I say? I’m a perfectly rational human being—unless I see a spider. Then, I turn into a screaming lunatic. I’ve faced down snakes, cranky toddlers and the fear of loosing someone I love. But when it comes to the creep crawly little  eight legged critters, I yell for reinforcements, i.e., my hubby. So, he knows very well about my irrational fear of spiders. But, we’re talking about my husband here. He’s the guy who loves to wind me up.

So, the other morning, I grab my coffee from my kitchen, head into my study to start working on my next book—and guess what I found sitting on my keyboard? THIS! A big, hairy spider! I screamed! My coffee went flying. And I tore out of the room. Then I hear it. Hubby’s laugh. Suddenly, the light goes on. Hubby is to blame. He’s laughing so hard, he’s almost crying. I could have killed him!

Slowly, I crept back into the study. The spider hadn’t moved. Hubby assured me through his laughter that it was already dead. He’d found it outside. I made him take it outside, then take a picture of it for something for scale to show how big it was. Look at the size of it!

Well, in the end, I decided not to divorce my husband, but he knows he’s skating on thin ice for a while.

RWA’s National Conference & Giveaway

Ahh…Florida! Yup, I’m relaxing in the Sunshine State. Yeah, right! No, I’m actually at RWA’s National Conference in Orlando. And while I am having a great time reconnecting with old friends and attending the events, I’m still working. I taught a two-hour workshop, had several book signing, and met with my publishers. Okay, I ‘ll admit it, there were parties, too.  I partied at my agency’s cocktail event.  Oh, and my publishers threw parties.  I ate yummy appetizer’s at Grand Central’s get-together and had front row seats at Disney World’s fireworks.   And visited, chatted and laughed with authors at the St. Martin’s party.  I can honestly say meeting with other writer’s is one of the main reasons I enjoy this conference.  We are like a big family.  Even if you don’t know them, it’s like being instantly connected because writers are so often alike.

I always feel like I should start training for this conference a couple of months ahead. Every time, it’s at a very large hotel, so there is a lot of walking, and it never fails I’ll be at one end of the hotel and I’ll have to get to opposite end in a hurry. Then there’s the eating! Good thing I’m walking, because I enjoy going out to eat with my friends, and the food is always great.

The RITA and Golden Heart Awards ceremony was awesome. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists. We had a great turnout for RWA’s Autographing for Literacy, which is a huge (and when I say huge, I mean 500+ authors) book signing event. I think that’s always my favorite event at this conference because I get to meet so many on my fans. Sometimes, I finally get to meet a fan who has been emailing me for years. It’s such a cool feeling to connect with them. The Autographing for Literacy is something RWA does at every conference, and has donated all the proceeds to literacy programs since 1990. It’s raised over 1 million dollars since then! So, I’m always eager to participate in the book signing. Here are some pics from the Literacy Autographing.

At these conferences I also get to meet librarians, bloggers and reviewers.  (This is a pic of me with blogger Debbie Wiley from Fresh Fiction.) So, I love being able to create some buzz for This Heart of Mine and The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave. Lots of people have been asking me about them. Have you pre-ordered your copy of This Heart of Mine?  Pre-order now at Amazon, Barnes & NobleBooks-A-Million, Powell’s, Indiebound and iBooks.  Or check out the Goodreads giveaway below and you could win yourself a copy! The Mortician’s Daughter: One Foot in the Grave will be up soon!!

I loved meeting another blogger and a fan! Jessica Porter and her blogger daughter Anarece–yes, she is a blogger. Her blog is Crossroads Reviews, and she brought all my books to the Literacy Autographing for my to sign.

And did I mention parties? Yup, this is me having a wonderful time at the Bookends party with (L to R) Kim Lionetti, Pamela Lebud, me, Rochelle Wienstein and Christina Britton. Good times!

By the time this blog comes out, however, I’ll be back home working extra hard to make up for the days I was at the conference.  I love traveling, but it’s always nice to come home.
